MY STORY
Hi there, my name is Kayla Barron and I am a current freshman at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA.
Ever since I was young, I have really enjoyed baking. While my mom attended medical school, she took Wilton cake-decorating classes and even made a few wedding cakes. Since cake decorating was a hobby of hers, I began to take an interest in it as well. When I was in fifth grade, my mom and I took basic course together; starting my love of creative cakes.
It wasn’t until high school that I began to realize I had a passion for cake decorating. Starting my freshman year, I began to make birthday cakes for friends and family, free of charge.
The moment that I truly thought of this hobby as a business was the summer of 2013. My friend asked if I could create her mother’s wedding cake. Though it was tough, I was successful in creating my first ever wedding cake, entirely without help. It was the first cake I ever got a paycheck for.
Literally a week later, a coworker of my mom called to ask if I could make a wedding cake for his daughter. I accepted the challenge and amongst the beginning of my junior year, I made another giant cake with fondant flowers galore. It was when I began receiving checks for my hard work that I realized this was turning into a serious business. I first penned myself as Red Barron Cakes, not intending to keep this title. I researched pricing techniques of other bakeries and figured out some standard forms for customers; truly embracing this as an official business.
After a few months as operation as Red Barron Cakes, my mom’s doctor’s office hired me to become their monthly cake supplier for their monthly meetings. Then, in the New Year I was hired for another wedding. I was beginning to be known by my business so one night I completely rebranded out of the blue. Overnight, I became Cakes by Kayla, with completely knew documents and social media accounts to boot. With my new brand, I have helped many people celebrate with sweetness.
